RRI Energy provides energy, capacity, ancillary and other energy services to wholesale customers in energy markets in the U.S. through its ownership and operation of and contracting for power generation capacity. Co. has four reportable segments. The East Gas, West and Other segments consist primarily of gas plants while the East Coal segment is its coal plants. In each of its segments, Co. sells electricity, capacity, ancillary and other energy services from its plants in hour-ahead, day-ahead and forward markets in bilateral and independent system operator markets. As of Dec 31 2009, Co. owned, had an interest in, leased or contracted for power from 37 electric power plants.
